Tales of the Bayou.
a story my friend is writing for me and i love the idea of it so much that i decided to do a front cover for it :D

or if nothing else , fan art!

the premise is basically that a man loses the love of his life. a younger man. unable to cope with the grief, the man goes to an old voodoo queen in the local bayou and asks for her help. She tells him to enlist the help of Baron Samedi, one of the Loa kings of the voodoo world.

Which he does.

He summons the Baron and asks him to bring his lover back from the grave.

Which the Baron does.

However, the Baron doesnt enjoy satisfying customers and is known for his tricks. So he brings the man back, but inserts his soul into the body of a newborn beagle puppy, who can only return to human form for a week every year on Mardi Gras.

all the while whilst darker things are stirring in the Bayou.

heheh, i love the idea so much, as you can tell.

all of this is work in progress, including aspects of the story, but im proud of this so far, so i thought id share the progress thus far. :) i only started this today anyways

EDIT

this is the second edit for this piece, and im leaving it for a bit so i can get some more opinions. making it more 'book covery' is difficult, so any thoughts, or references would be very much appreciated :)

Dude this is looking super awesome(er) now. Flipping the Baron really helped the composition a lot and everything is looking nice and refined. I really enjoy how you rendered man, especially his shirt oh god I could reach in the monitor and touch it. This may be me being dumb but did you turn down the contrast for the Baron too? I remember him being slightly brighter. Not that it's a bad thing, I'm just wondering.

aaah captain youve made my day! thanks so much dude! im glad you think the same as i do with the composition, it helped level everything out, i think mainly becase of the cigar being over a tall tombstone made it lopsided, but i think i fixed it.
and not being dumb at all, i did fade him ever so slightly, it pushed him to the back just a bit, with the new composition, it made him seem a bit over the top, but with a little adjustment, i think it made him seem a little more mysterious. whilst he IS the most powerful guy in the frame, and the biggest, the baddest etc, the stories about the guy and his puppy, so i needed to brighten the two of them, or make them bigger, so seeing as i couldnt really do either, i faded the baron a litle.

argh, you get a brofist for being awesome with comments dude, i really appreciate it. im guna look through some of your new ones ASAP!
also, did you delete your tumblr? :O

Perpetually improving artskills Jamiebro y/y?

Overall it's looking great so far, as always you've got dat masterful lighting going on which we can see even in the sketches down at the bottom. Most of the tweaking needed so far I think, could be used on the anatomy. The dog I can't really critique yet since he/she is still a rough sketch, but the bugger is looking like he could use a ribcage. The Baron's right shoulder also looks pretty low in comparison to his other side, so bringing it up a notch would even it out. Last couple of things are if you haven't tried the mirroring the picture trick in shoop yet, give that a whirl. With that you can see his nose and side of the face on the right hand side are a little oblong and could use some evening out as far as size is concerned. (One nostril is kind of quite larger than the other in comparison and his jawline just looks a bit uneven. These are nitpicks though really)

But overall it's looking great, I love all this voodoo-hoodoo magic stuff you've been doing as of late. Is this one going to be full color, grayscale or limited palette?

hahahah cheers dude! im loving doing this one, voodoo is a particular favourite of mine as of late :3
thanks very much for all the feedback here. i agree with you, anatomy on such a dakr character is hard, not least because ive never really painted an african face, so its quite hard to get it right with reverting to just a caucasian with dark skin. the nose, as you mentioned, is being a bugger, along with the jawline, and i found his eyes to be a pickle too. because theres alot of shade, makign them too dark makes them look not there at all. AND I WILL NOT LET THAT HAPPEN. XD

the dude and his pup are literally just quick thumbnails too. in the reference, the guys crouched over, with his head alost to his chest, and i obviously wanted him looking up in terror at the image or thoguht of the Barons power, so its still kinda left his back there as if hes leaning forward whe nhes in fact standing more upright.

and voodoo's great. you should try it soem time ;) hahaha! and grayscale, definitely, i learnt alot from Ver on this one actually, by observing her comics, ive kinda learnt how to use various scales of grey for painting wiht no saturation, rather than just low opacities of black. it can really work wonders. i may give it a bit of a wash wit ha brown hue to make it look a bit older, but if it doesnt work, I'll be keeping it B and W.

i really appreciate the comment bud, you didnt haff tooooo! :iconblushplz:

Nooo problemo man, I'm glad if any of this can be of help.

Figured the bottom fellows were pretty quick but wasn't sure since the guy's anatomy is pretty spot on for a sketch. Ethnic characters, when we're not used to them is terribly tough. Especially with realism methinks, since something just as small as a wayward smudge can turn David Tennant into a brand new special needs cousin so totally props to you!

Voodoo is great, and I should try it sometime! Your art is definitely inspiration to give it a whirl, specially with all these masks and magicks. Also speaking of inspiration, I'm going to do some shameless pimpage for this guy and see if you maybe you might get some fun ideas about playing around with greyscale or colors in general, since I find myself looking at his gallery a lot as well.

it has been! i'll be letting you know when the ful things been redone, its going slowly because of my new job, but otherwise its not a so bad. the guys gone a bit better, as has the puppy in his arms, and the gravestones are being filled in.

and god yes, the religion is such a rich source of inspiration, the legends of the voodoo queens of old lousiana, how it blended in from catholocism. everything, so i reccomend giving it a look into :3
and that dude is legendary, ive seen his work before! :D his lighting techniques are superb to say the least, but its just everything really. youre sucha pimp captain :P
